Gold Coin Bargain! The Story of Ann Brainerd | All American Coin Shop Fort Myers

Gold Coin Bargain!

Everyone loves a bargain. Everyone loves a good story. So here goes the story of Ann Brainerd. In the year 1900 nine year old Ann Brainerd traded a small gold coin, which had been gifted to her by her grandparents for an acre sized lot on Captiva Island. She described the lot as the prettiest place she had ever seen.

Unfortunately for Ann, soon after her purchase she stepped on a rusty nail and contracted tetanus and died within a week. Her grieving parents buried her on her newly purchased land. Shaded by huge sea grape trees and within sight of the gulf , she is not alone. Her parents bought the surrounding ten acres and donated the land for use as a community cemetery, now called the Captiva Cemetery. It is on the National Register of historic places. Now that’s a bargain! A beautiful waterfront lot for yourself for all eternity for only a small gold coin. So if you’re visiting Sanibel or Captiva go by and see Ann and place a sea shell on her tombstone , like so many others have done. She’d like that.
